Four Exchange Server Vulnerabilities, Ransomware hitting the energy and food industries. It’s a scary time in IT and the world. Your onsite email server could be a money pit… Or even worse a backdoor into your business for hackers. Lets take a look at 3 reasons your email server is a ticking time bomb.

#1 Patching Speed

If you ask any IT professional they will tell you patching is one of the most important pieces of your cyber security plan. You can bet your bottom dollar when the exchange vulnerabilities were uncovered that all of the exchange servers Microsoft manages got patched. How long does it take your organization to patch? Do you have a patch approval process? Do you have software to push patches to your devices, quickly and efficiently? Leave a comment down below on how your organization handles patching!

Thumb Solutions has automated solutions to patch all types of software and devices! If you aren’t getting patches pushed out quickly and efficently, you have a time bomb in your network! Click Here, to let us help you keep your systems time bomb free!

#2 Redundancy

Do you have your servers on a battery backup/s? How about your network equipment? Do you have a generator that will power your IT stack? Do you have redundant internet connections? Do you have a redundant email server? The more questions you answered no to, equals downtime in your future. All of the above is costly, to purchase, implement, and maintain. All of this is included in your Office 365 subscription. With office 365 as long as you have internet somewhere you will be able to get your email.

#3 Security by default

Let’s discuss a hypothetical situation. Joe at company ABC has been tasked with spinning up an email server. Company ABC has a small IT budget. They can only afford:

  • Windows Server 2019 License
  • Windows Cals
  • Exchange Server License

Company ABC can’t afford any tools to help Joe complete his task. Joe installs Windows, configures best practices for Windows, updates Windows, Installs exchange server, configures and hardens the exchange server. He then has to configure the exchange server for anti-spam and malware capabilities. Joe is a fantastic engineer. However, unless he has automated the entire process discussed above, I would bet he missed at least one step in securing the server. You will never have to worry about the above scenario with office 365 as this has already been automated.

Conclusion

All my IT experience tells me that the only sane reason to host your own email server is if you have a legal requirement to do so. Switching to office 365 will bolster your security, reduce cost, free up resources, and more. To me it’s a no brainer to switch. However, you might have a different opinion! Am I overlooking benefits to hosting your email server on-prem? Did I miss any reasons to shift your email into 365? Let me know in the comments below!
